Celeriac seeds should be sown indoors from February to April. As celeriac has a long growing season, starting seeds early gives plants plenty of time to develop large, well-formed roots before harvest. Once seedlings are established and all risk of frost has passed, they can be transplanted outdoors in late spring into fertile, moisture-retentive soil.
Celeriac is best started indoors in trays or small pots filled with quality seed compost. Sow seeds thinly on the surface of the compost and lightly press them in, or cover with a very fine layer of vermiculite. Keep the compost consistently moist and place in a warm, bright location until germination. Once seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into individual pots before planting outdoors after the risk of frost has passed. Grow celeriac in fertile, moisture-retentive soil in a sunny or partially shaded position and water regularly throughout the growing season to encourage large, well-developed roots.
Celeriac is a slow-growing vegetable that is typically ready to harvest around 6 to 8 months after sowing, depending on the variety and growing conditions. The swollen roots can be lifted from late summer through autumn and, in mild conditions, may be left in the ground into winter until required. Their excellent storage qualities make celeriac a valuable crop for providing home-grown produce during the colder months.
Celeriac is a versatile and rewarding vegetable that produces large, flavourful roots ideal for roasting, mashing, soups and hearty winter dishes. Growing celeriac from seed allows you to raise healthy plants from the start of the season and enjoy a generous harvest of nutritious home-grown vegetables. With its excellent storage qualities and long harvesting period, celeriac is a valuable addition to the kitchen garden, providing fresh produce well into the colder months.
Celeriac grows well in vegetable gardens, raised beds and allotments. It prefers fertile, moisture-retentive soil and performs best in a sunny position, although it will tolerate light shade. Regular watering is important, particularly during dry weather, as consistent moisture helps produce larger, smoother roots. Well suited to UK gardens, celeriac thrives where it has plenty of moisture and a long growing season to develop strong, healthy roots.
Choosing the right celeriac variety depends on your gardening goals. Some varieties are known for producing large, smooth roots with excellent flavour, while others offer reliable performance and strong growth in a range of conditions. Whether you're looking for a dependable harvest, easy preparation or roots suitable for winter storage, there's a celeriac variety to suit your needs.
